The Legislative council adopts resolution supporting review plea
The Legislative Council on Monday adopted a unanimous resolution supporting the State’s plan to file a review petition on the Supreme Court’s directive to release 2.44 tmcft of water to Tamil Nadu and also highlighting the severe shortage of water in the Cauvery basin in Karnataka.

The resolution was moved by Leader of the Opposition S.R. Patil, who said all the areas coming under the Cauvery basin in the State were reeling under a water crisis leading to crop losses amounting to Rs. 15,000 crore.

The written text of the resolution is expected to be ready by Tuesday before the filing of the review petition.

Later, Mr. Patil told reporters that the resolution would indicate that Karnataka was not in a position to release water to Tamil Nadu as the water in its reservoirs was not enough to meet its drinking water and crop requirements.

Earlier, participating in a debate on the water sharing in the Council, Mr. Patil alleged that the State government had failed to ensure that its legal team handled the issue effectively before the Supreme Court. But both Chief Minister Jagadish Shettar and Minister for Water Resources Basavaraj Bommai staunchly denied this and maintained that the State’s legal team had done its best.
