· In 1985 the Ramanathapuram dt was bifurcated into Ramanathapuram, Pasumpon Muthuramalinga Thavar Tirumagan district, Kamarajar district.
· Later in 1997 kamarajar district was changed as Virudhunagar.
· It has 1. Parliamentary and 7 legislative assembly seats
· Rivers: R. Arjun, R.Kundaru, R.Vaigai, R.Kowsi.
Speciality
· The emblem of Tamil Nadu holds the tomb of Srivilliputur temple.
· Sivagasi is also called ‘Little Japan’ as 90% of the crackers are produced in this place.
· 4th tamil sangam was organised by Pandithurai Tavar.
· Thirusuli is a place where Ramana Maharishi was born.
· ‘Cotton city’ Rajapalayam of this district is called as cotton city.
· This district also exports oil, grains etc so it is also called as ‘Business city’
· This districts produces high level of ‘match boxes’.
